January 2019: Fact in Fiction
~ Ashlyn Chase ~
How much of your real life bleeds over into your books? And do you worry that someone will be able to tell the fact from the fiction?
Ashlyn Chase said:
I try not to do it intentionally, because once when I based a story on my real life it got trashed in a Good Reads review. The reader called it drek! That’s Yiddish for garbage! My life is garbage? Holy sh*t!
I asked my publisher to take it down since it was a freebie and not making them any money anyway. The only way she would comply is if I promised never to write about my real life again. LOL. No problem. I learned my lesson.
Then I asked Goodreads to take it down and the person in charge refused, saying that people already had it in their libraries and would want to review it. More reviews? Even if the reviews don’t mean anything since no one can download the book anymore? Oh, h*ll no.
So, I haven’t been back to Good Reads since. People tell me it’s no big deal, and I’ll admit it’s nowhere near as important as it used to be, but I still don’t want to see a particularly important time in my life called garbage. Lesson learned! Don’t write for reviews, but don’t open your collar and let someone with a knife see your jugular.
