Excerpt:

A hard knot twisted her throat. “You don’t want me.” A part of her shriveled up and died.

“I do want you.” He sounded as if he’d had to force the words out, need in his voice. “She’s gone, and it’s not that I don’t…that I haven’t thought…”

“Then what?” She gazed up at him. “What’s stopping you?”

“Everything.”

“Like what?”

“You’re not meant for me.”

“Who says? The League? The city? We could die tonight. Dark has weapons that could kill me, and you’ve already come close in the last week. So some stupid rules should stop us from having an hour of happiness?”

Jev shook his head, face creased in confusion. “It’s not as simple as that.”

“It is.” She kissed him and put meaning into it. He held himself away from her but didn’t move, accepting the kiss even though he didn’t respond more. He tasted of something sweet and coffee, and a vague tang of mint. After a moment, Kadie leaned away to look him in the eye. He clenched his jaw, unable to meet her gaze.

She gulped. “Was it that bad?”

“No.”

“Then why don’t you kiss me back?”

“Because I’m afraid.”

“Afraid of what?”

“Afraid of tomorrow. Of how you’ll feel when you become Nocturnelle but remembering what you did as Kadie.”

“You think my feelings will change just because my skin does?” She brushed his face. “That she’ll boot your behind for taking liberties with her feeble mortal self?”

He managed a smile. “Maybe something like that.”

“You don’t think Nelle might actually envy me?”

“I…” He swallowed. “I shouldn’t be doing this but…”

He leaned down and kissed her, hard. Wrapped his arms around her. Pulled her tight against him.

She wanted more of him. More than his mouth on hers. More than his hands skimming over the fabric covering her back.

“Kadie…” His voice, rough with desire, made her ache. Right now, all she needed was him.

“Don’t stop.”

“I don’t think I can. But Kadie?”

“Yes?”

“If you want me to stop, all you have to do is…”

She silenced him with her mouth, stopping any further speech. He grasped her hips, tugging her hard against him in response. The heat of him burned into her as she reached under the loose ends of his shirt, exploring the firm muscle of his back. She found knotted scars as she travelled upward, these from battle rather than the surgery that had saved his life. As she traced each scar, he held her as tight and close as her second skin, but stirred a thrill within her deeper and more exhilarating than traveling the city as Nelle. Her breath caught as every fiber in her body coiled tight and her legs shook. Nothing, not even an adrenaline fueled flight through Nephopolis could compete. She looped her hands around his neck, frightened of falling, of him moving away as need consumed her. Don’t let this be the only time. Don’t let this end…
