Cindi, your post got me to thinking – which can be a scary thing, indeed!! But you mentioned how the Laura Ingles Wilder series was what got you started in writing.Â
We are looking to give away some books, so in order to do so, you have to work for it/them!! We here at Coffee Time want to know if you had a series when you were younger that got you interested in reading. Perhaps a particular series got you interested in a specific genre.
For example when I was little I loved anything that had to do with horses. Black Beauty and the Black Stallion were my favorites! I used to imagine I was the one riding the horses – and to this day I love the movies.
The series I loved the most was Encyclopedia Brown. I loved that you could try to figure out the ending and pick what page the answer was on. So neat. Of course when I got older and discovered romance – I was hooked on that. But I want to hear about a SERIES of books – and if you didn’t get into reading until you were older, we won’t hold that against you.

14 years agoFor me there were two series: Heralds of Valdemar by Mercedes Lackey and the Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey.
I wanted my own dragon and Companion after reading those books.

14 years agoOkay. I’ll confess to a life-long addiction to series. Seriously. From waaaay back, The Bobsey Twins, Laura Ingles Wilder, Nancy Drew, Cherry Aimes, Trixie Beldon, Meg Mysteries, Little Women, and I can’t forget Anne, who I followed from Green Gables right through her college years and her marriage to Gilbert.
Still love series, La Nora’s trilogies, Janet Evanovitch, Diana Gabaldon, Ann Aguirre…
I’m not surprised I’m working on a series of my own, but I am surprised it took me this long to get around to it. 🙂

14 years agoI became a huge Tolkien in my tweens, but before that, my mom subscribed me to Doubleday’s Best in Children’s Books series, which contained everything from Aesop’s Fables to articles on various countries and book excerpts. I couldn’t wait for the mailman to bring me a new book each month!
I haven’t yet tried a series, but I hope to. 😉

14 years agoNancy Drew was HUGE for me; some of my best memories was going to the giant bookstore downtown with my mum or dad and looking through all the Nancy Drews. The difficult part was only picking one each visit! Today I like to pick and choose from each author, but maybe if I find another ‘Nancy Drew’ heroine in a series, I’ll go for that! Any ideas?

14 years agoI can remember in grade school my favorite day of the week was library day. I think I read every one of the books they had on famous people (I don’t know what the series was ~ but there were men and women from history)
And, then in 5th grade we had to write a letter (I don’t remember if it had to do with letter writing or if it was supposed to be to an author) but, I wrote to Kathryn Kenny. She sent me 3 autographed Trixie Belden books and from that moment on I was hooked.

14 years agoOh, lots of series. The Bobbsey Twins, Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, the books in Walter Farley’s Black Stallion series… and later, Sherlock Holmes. These days it’s Elizabeth Peters, Terry Pratchett, Janet Evanovich, Robert Parker, . The most recent series – my favorite, I think – is Patrick O’Brian’s naval saga that they used to make the film “Master and Commander.” Twenty books–hog heaven!
I love series. Finding an author I enjoy is always a treat, and it’s even better when the author has continuing characters.

14 years agoI was a Nancy Drew fan all the way. Think I read every single book at least twice. It has affected my choice in books ever since. Nothing like a good mystery!

14 years agoI started reading Hardy Boys books when I was 8 years old. I read a lot of that series and then when I hit my teens I became a big Trixie Belden fan. It had everything I wanted: horses, a little teen romance, and solving mysteries.

14 years agoSweet Valley Twins / Sweet Valley High and the Baby-Sitters Club book series were two of my favorites.
I also read a lot of V.C. Andrews as an early teen, not a kids’ series but a lot of us were reading them.

There was another series I liked which featured a girl named Meg. She solved mysteries, like Nancy Drew.

14 years agoI also read Sweet Valley Twins/Sweet Valley high. I still have a set of them I’m trying to get my niece to read. My mom had romance that I started reading when I was 13 and read them still.
Talking about kids stories my niece got me into reading Michelle Pavers Chronicle of Ancient Darkness last year. I love this series and it became reading time between both of us. We even got her mom and dad into reading with us. 😮

14 years agoThe first book I ever read that grabbed my attention and held me was Prisoner of My Desire by Johanna Lindsay when I was 12 (yes I was young). However, the first series I can remember having to have each and every one of was Karen Marie Monings Highlander Series. It started me down a very nice path thank you very much!!! Since then it has grown to J.R. Ward, Gena Showalter, Janet Chapman, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, and Artemis Fowl just to name a few lol.

What got me hooked on romance was Sandra Brown’s ‘Texas Trilogy’ series: I loved this series and also Anne of Green Gables series. I have the set of each.

I adore Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series, too.
I’ve only written a couple of series myself. I did 5 books for American Romance set in Crested Butte. I did a historical trilogy for Kensington a long time ago. No series for Super yet.

14 years agoThe book that got me hooked on reading was CW Anderson’s Afraid to Ride, closely followed by Marguerite Henry’s Album of Horses. Can you tell I was a little horse crazy??? Later on I read the Black Stallion books and any other story involving horses. I also loved Agatha Christie’s mysteries once I turned about ten.

14 years agoI actually got started with Sweet Valley High. Then I got out of reading, but I got started back reading with Christopher Stasheff’s Warlock series. That’s what brought me into Sci-Fi/Fantasy. Now I read anything listed as paranormal/Urban Fantasy (whether it be romance or erotica and anywhere in between) along with the afore mentioned genres. I think I had some of the Bobbsey Twins books, and Nancy Drew too, but I don’t remember reading them too much. I had different books over the years that drew my attention and I can’t remember them all. I just know that for along time I really disliked reading because I was made to read and do book reports on what I read for school.

14 years agoOh, gosh, Marguerite Henry–that was the name I couldn’t remember. But there was never just one book.. my mom read to all of us literally before we saw the light of day. Best thing she ever did for me. My current favorite series in romance in Charlie Cochrane’s Cambridge Fellows books – the “Lessons In” stories (Lessons in Love, Lessons in Desire, etc.) They’re an m/m sweet romance – nothing explicit – and wonderful mysteries.

14 years agoI hated reading books till I got in 5th grade. Till then I was happy watching Disney Classic Cartoons or any other animated cartoons. 🙂 Library was one of the most boring periods for me during school. Then one day I was forced to get up and choose a book. 😐 It was a small kid’s book of HE-Man series. That got me wanting to read more but unfortunately did not find more of this particular series, but it kept me searching and trying out new books mostly in fantasy side.
Then I came across Sweet Valley Kids series. Opened a whole new world for me and got me hooked. 😯 I have followed them from kids to twins, twins to high, from high to university. I even read some of the new series they branched off from twins: Junior High & Senior High (but didn’t do much for me). I did recently read that they might bring in Adult Elizabeth & Jessica Novels. Can’t wait! 😀
Nancy Drew series got me into mysteries. Hardy Boys Casefiles moved me on from Nancy Drew and got me hooked. I did love the supermystery series they started with Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys combo but for some reason only a select few books were published.
Some of series by R.L Stine were good but did not get me into horror series. Anne Rice ‘Vampire series’ got me interested in paranormal genre.
Any of you heard of Jahnna N.Malcom? I got hold of her Hart & Soul series in 1999 and since them am still looking for more of her books. That series was really really good, about a high school girl & her mysterious beau solving mysteries. Unique is the word I would use for them even though concept is same. I highly recommend if you want to refresh old times. 😉
A Love Stories books got me into sweet young teen romance. While being stand-alone novels by various authors, they all had same concept of series.
It was a step-by-step growth for me, discovering new genres, moving up in age groups and finding atleast one author or series that keeps me hooked in each.
Nowadays, I am hooked on Sherrilyn Kenyon’s ‘Dark Hunters’, J.R WArd’s ‘BlackDagger’, Lora Leigh’s ‘Breed Series’, Tess Gerritsen’s ‘Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles series (medical thrillers – bone chillingly brilliant!), Harry Potter and many more.
To summarize ‘I am a book addict and can not stay without reading ‘atleast’ one book a week. I go nuts otherwise. All you authors are a great inspiration for me. I want to write my own creation from reading so much but so far I haven’t gotton past the first few pages. Someday soon.’ 😉

14 years agoI can’t remember when I didn’t read. My mother and I weren’t together much – most of my younger years she worked and went to school. But one thing we shared was a love of reading, so she was more than happy to buy me the entire Bobbsy Twin series – the same story length as Nancy Drew but about a younger group of mystery solvers, two sets of twins in one family. There were over a hundred of these books!
Since then I have read thousands of books in every genre. I am very glad to say that both my daughters seem to love reading just as much!

14 years agoGrowing up, I always had a book in hand. But the books I remember reading most were Heidi, the Babysitter’s Club series and the Crystal Singer series by Anne McCafferey. I read Heidi so much the book fell apart. There was also an historical romance series I read (written for young adults) but I can’t remember the what it’s called. I still have those books in a box somewhere. Now my favorite authors are Katie MacAlister, Janet Evanovich, Christine Feehan and Karen Marie Moning (and many more).

Love , Romance and History all rolled into one.
I still today seek all the books once more to read.
A really great series that kept me hopping and wanting so much more.Serge Golon and wife Anne Golan worked together to create this faulous set of books . They will always be in my heart.
