The Wilde Passions of Dorian Gray (Or How I Came to Adore Dear Oscar)

Oscar Wilde’s literary classic The Picture of Dorian Gray has captivated me ever since I first read it at the tender age of ten. Even back then I was able to pick up on the homo-erotic elements in the work. While reading Mr. Wilde, I began to fall under Dorian’s spell right along with the characters in the book. As a reader, I’ve always loved the Gothic novel—and this one pushed all the right buttons for me. As a writer, it’s a genre I very much enjoy working in.

Therefore perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that years later I would decide to create something new out of this classic. In this instance, I penned a sequel rather than a reimagining or a rewritten version. Those who are familiar with my work know that I like to mix and blend genres together—and I’ve definitely done so here. The Wilde Passions of Dorian Gray is erotic fiction, Gothic horror, paranormal romance, dark fantasy, and LGBT fiction all in one volume.

When we last saw Dorian, he was already a highly debauched fellow. To continue his story, I needed to rachet this up to extreme levels while likewise crafting a plausible scenario to show that he did not meet his death as seen in Oscar Wilde’s novel. A man whose sole purpose in life is to experience new sensations, new thrills—surely such a man would do anything to cheat death in order to enjoy still more thrilling sensations, most of which are combined with sex and the element of danger. For Dorian, sex is a tool—and he uses it in imaginative and shocking ways. His passions are dark, and they get even darker as the novel progresses.

Dorian lives for the corruption, degradation and destruction of others, even welcoming these things in return. He is not the hunky male hero you might find on the cover of a romance novel—and The Wilde Passions of Dorian Gray is by no means your typical romance novel. Indeed, as I state in my introduction to the book, it is not for the faint of heart. However, that’s not to say Dorian isn’t a romantic character. His journey through time and from continent to continent brings him increasing enlightenment about his true self. Yet the ultimate enlightenment arrives when he lands in modern-day New Orleans, where he joins with a group of supernaturally inclined young men and women known as the Night People. Through his association with them, Dorian comes to discover still another (and very surprising) aspect to his nature—one that ends up being his greatest revelation of all.
